It’s known for it’s highly legible display with super bright indices and hands that glow far into the night.Īnd I love it - but… it’s after owning the SKX I realised I didn’t want to always look like I had a big, flash watch on my wrist. It was a bargain and I hadn’t yet convinced myself I could even attempt to modify a watch of my own. Along the way I did succumb to buying the classic Seiko divers watch - the SKX007. The 37mm Seiko SNK against the 43mm Seiko SKX. It appealed on a number of levels the watches that served as the donor were well-regarded but pretty cheap, a custom watch has your own personal touch, and best of all it makes you feel more skilled than you actually are. To cut a long story short, I learned of the Seiko “modding” sub-culture where people swap out watch components to make new twists on existing designs. You either buy a Chinese “homage” or you look at a Seiko. So if you’re looking for a mechanical automatic watch and happen to also be a cheapskate, you have two routes. To be honest, I am neither rich, nor insane, so Swiss classics are out of my budget. In any case, all that romantic talk of precision and craft sparked my need to find out more about this arcane world. It’s almost as though Apple wanted not just nerds like me, but Omega Speedmaster owners to take their little touch-screen seriously. But the Apple watch was launched with much referential talk of “horology”, “complications” and “milanese bands” that was hard to ignore. Wait, what?īefore this moment, I’d worn a Swatch chrono on my wrist for over a decade and never even bothered to ask what the buttons did. I’m one of those people that was drawn into the world of mechanical watches because I was interested in the Apple watch. The luminous dial and hands start with an astonishing brightness, but within minutes settle down to a readable glow for the whole night. Oh, and it should be cheap enough to not cause panic attacks when it becomes splattered in porridge. It should be comfortable enough to wear 24 hours-a-day and to be discrete enough that playing with your kids doesn’t risk accidentally leaving them with the imprint of a 45mm gnarled bezel on their heads. The requirements are many but not too demanding it has be splash proof, to be readable all through the night to separate “go back to bed” from “we’ll get up soon”. Or the associated price.īut if I could be presumptuous for a moment, I’d add a new tool watch category - the “parent watch”. That’s not to say their core features aren’t useful to me, but being waterproof doesn’t mean I need a watch to withstand diving to great depths, just as being easy-to-read in the dark doesn’t mean I need NATO standard radioactive promethium coated minute hands. That being so, “tool watches” (as watch enthusiasts call them) such as true divers’, aviators’ or sailors’ watches would be lost on me - or at least merely a bit of fantasy on my part. I don’t scuba, or pilot a plane, or skipper a ship. Matplotlib title different font size Matplotlib title font size In The Legend of Vox Machina’s 25-minute episodes, one minute you’ll be watching Scanlan make a sordid joke and the next a child will be murdered. Whilst the tone of the original Campaign One can veer between stupid and serious, this happened over the course of sometimes five-hour-long sessions. The show still feels like it’s rushing attempting to cram in the same character development and plotlines that took literally hours to tell.īesides the odd fixation on crude humour and violence, it’s also the cause of a serious tone problem throughout all five episodes I watched. At one point there’s a great reference to a running joke made in Campaign Two that just reminded me how actually funny Critical Role can be. It also helped that most jokes were often told in a fourth-wall breaking way where it felt more like your mates were sharing a giggle with you, rather than trying desperately to impress you with how rude they can be. The difference here is that I don’t remember Campaign One reveling in its cruder aspects nearly this much. I’m certainly not playing the prude here Castlevania is one of my favourite animated series and it’s filled to the brim with nudity and violence. There are burp jokes mixed in with dick jokes mixed in with all the extremely gratuitous violence. There's a nice variety of Character designs in The Legend of Vox Machina. In fact, characters in LoVM say fuck with all the gusto of a 12-year-old who’s just discovered its existence. Cue, in rapid succession, vomiting jokes, explicit nudity and sex, burp jokes, and profusive use of the word ‘fuck’. After a party of unfortunate heroes is violently slain – and I mean REALLY violently – the series quickly jumps to our protagonists getting drunk at a tavern, before a classic bar-fight erupts inside. Taking place in a world created by Mercer, the animated series begins in an incredibly bizarre fashion that I really wasn’t prepared for. The Legend of Vox Machina focuses on the antics of Vex, Vax, Grog, Scanlan, Pike, Keyleth and Percy, a band of mercenaries for hire who find themselves quickly wrapped up in matters much larger than they were prepared for. I don’t remember Campaign One reveling in its cruder aspects nearly this much. It’s come a long way since Campaign One, hence the animated series on Amazon Prime, but at its core it’s still a show about playing an RPG – which is inevitably lost when it’s translated into a television series. Having just finished watching the first half of the first season, I still believe this.įor the uninitiated, Critical Role is a series in which a group of voice actors – comprised of some pretty big names such as Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us), the Video Game BAFTA-winning Laura Bailey (The Last of Us II) and dungeon master Matthew Mercer (Overwatch) - play D&D together and stream it live on Twitch. I may have cooled on Critical Role in recently, but I still have a deep affection for its very first campaign, which serves as the foundation for The Legend of Vox Machina, and didn’t believe that an animated series would be a good fit. On the contrary, it’s because I loved it. This isn’t because I didn’t like Critical Role – the Dungeons & Dragons actual play show it’s based on. I didn’t back the Kickstarter campaign for The Legend of Vox Machina, an animated series which makes its debut on Amazon Prime this week. Maggie Simpson In The Force Awakens From Its’ Nap is basically a promotional short to celebrate Star Wars Day and shouldn’t really be put in the same category as Longest Daycare or Playdate With Destiny. I also really liked the end credits images merging Star Wars with The Simpsons with the nice music to go along with it. The references and homages are nicely done, even using some Disney references in this as well like the Seven Dwarfs. The way they do use the Star Wars universe in this does lead to a lot of very funny and very enjoyable bits of animation and I’ll give them points for not including an obvious Baby Yoda reference or making him the main Star Wars character in this, instead having it be BB8 which I love BB8, I’ll gladly take seeing more BB8 in anything since it seems like he’s kind of been pushed aside since Mandalorian came out. Even the animation as a whole isn’t really anything too grand and epic like the two shorts, it’s clearly using that same TV animation style from the series and it’s good animation, I’m not complaining about that at all. Maggie loses her pacifier, BB8 helps her get it back, Maggie then fights Baby Gerald as Darth Maul….and that’s it, there’s not really a whole lot there storywise and in the end, it makes this seem kind of pointless in the long run.īut I will be absolutely fair, I think the overall point of this was to celebrate Star Wars and pay respect to the franchise as a whole and not be considered something on the same levels as Daycare and Playdate. Maybe the other biggest flaw is that there really is not a whole lot here storywise. There is still a lot of new animation but this is the first of these shorts that recycles animation from past shorts. You can definitely see them recycling animation in this one like there are parts clearly taking from Longest Daycare and reanimated to include Star Wars elements. Unlike Daycare and Playdate, this is an incredibly short short film coming in just at 3 minutes while Playdate With Destiny and Longest Daycare were about more than half the length of this.Īnd unlike the previous two shorts, there are a few more flaws with this than there were with the other two shorts but at the same time, I do really enjoy this short for what it is, it’s a promotional short to celebrate Star Wars and a fairly enjoyable one at the most. I’ve been really loving the Maggie Simpson shorts, The Longest Daycare is great and last year’s Playdate With Destiny was really well done and I’m happy to see Disney experimenting more with The Simpsons even if it is just in small little shorts like this. This promotional short is the first of several from The Simpsons that Disney+ will be released throughout the year, to tie in with the service’s marquee brands and titles.įollows the plot, in a daycare far, far away… but still in Springfield, Maggie is on an quest for her stolen pacifier, getting from face with young Padawans, Sith Lords, familiar droids, Rebel scum, and an ultimate battle against the Dark Side in the Star Wars galaxy. It was released on on streaming service Disney+ as part of “Star Wars Day”. Maggie Simpson in “The Force Awakens from Its Nap” or simply The Force Awakens from Its Nap is an animated short film based on the television series The Simpsons and spoofing the Star Wars media franchise. There is plenty going on with richness and softness being complimented well by a distinct but underlying gentle peat smoke. This 12 years old is a good solid entry in to the age statement whiskies of Jura. Butterscotch, sugary toffee and milk chocolate come back and linger well. The soft smoke fades as the sweeter notes come back to the fore. These florals carry on in to the finish with a heather-like quality and the faint pot pourri note never far away. The sweeter notes begin to increase as the finish approaches and the dried pot pourri characteristic from the nose develops again. Then come further notes of robust barley grains, woody oak spices (cinnamon, all-spice and clove in particular with a late pinch of white pepper) and a hint of yeast. This has a dry, dusty and earthy feel to it with hints of moss and dried heather. Then comes the sweet and gentle peat smoke that seems to underpin everything. The early sweetness is present as on the nose with notes of milk chocolate, butterscotch and barley sugars combining well. On the palate this whisky has a rich, soft and rounded feel. Depth is added by an almond-like nuttiness, dried orange peel and warming spices (think of clove and cinnamon especially), plus hints cranberry and pot pourri. Aromas of icing sugar and butterscotch dominate with a underlying whiff of soft and sweet peat smoke. The colour is a deep golden yellow and the nose is instantly sugary and sweet. For further information on this or any of the other whiskies in the range, please visit Our tasting notes A bottle should cost around the £40/ $50 US. The Jura 12 years old is bottled at 40% ABV and is widely available globally. Under their ownership the brand has seen sales grow massively, especially in the last 10 years. The distillery has an annual production capacity of just over two million litres and is currently owned by Whyte & Mackay, who took control in 1993. Production restarted in 1963 and it has been operating ever since. It was closed for a long period between 19, at which point it was rebuilt using a design by renowned post-War distillery architect William Delmé-Evans. It was originally called the Small Isles distillery after the numerous islands located in Craighouse Bay, which the distillery sits on and overlooks. The Jura distillery is located on the Hebredean isle of Jura and was founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell. The two pockets of stock have then been married together to produce the final whisky. The whiskies involved in the 12 years old have followed two different paths - regular unpeated spirit has matured in ex-bourbon casks before a period of finishing in ex-Oloroso sherry barrels, while rarer peated spirit (which is only made for one month each year) has been matured solely in ex-bourbon casks. The range was revamped in 2018 and this 12 years old is joined by other age statements at 10, 18 and 21 years old plus three other 'no age statement' expressions - the French Oak, Journey and Seven Wood. The majority of Jura malt is aged in ex-Bourbon casks. This whisky forms part of the core range from the island distillery of Jura. Isle of Jura’s 10 Year Old has a fruity character, with a medium body, accented by ginger and coffee, and the characteristic slight briny taste of Jura malts. Instead Jura Whisky takes its character from the sea, after all, it is surrounded by it. This is quite different than its Scottish siblings across the way. Despite the fact that the water flows through a great deal of peat, the Whisky barely has any peaty character. The distillery sources their water from Loch a’Bhaile-Mhargaidh. Jura Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made from Scottish barley, milled and mashed on-site and distilled through Jura's enormous 28-foot tall copper-pot stills. Their Whiskies are just as curiously delightful. Today, the Jura Distillery is a curious hybrid creature, with its a fusion of modern distillation techniques and traditional craftsmanship, it remains one of the most remote and isolated distilleries on the planet. Nearly a century after it was opened, the distillery was dismantled due to a land dispute, and remained closed until 1963. The Old Jura Distillery was founded by Laird Archibald Campbell, and sits alongside the Corryvreckan Whirlpool. They are owned by independent bottlers Whyte and Mackay. The Isle of Jura distillery was founded in 1963, but its facilities date back as far as 1810, as being the first licensed distillery on Jura. On the island there is one road, one church, and one distillery (A Scot's life essentials). From the Isle of Jura comes the subtly briny sea goddess 10 YO single malt.Ħ0 miles off the western coast of Scottish mainland you will find the Isle of Jura, a sparsely inhabited island of Scotland… and we are not kidding when we say sparse - residents include 200 humans, and about 5,000 deer. |
